What Is Ise-Shima? Oharai-machi, Ama Divers, Pearls and Seafood

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who are deciding how to spend time in Ise-Shima beyond the shrines, and who want a plain overview first. It covers the shopping streets in front of Naiku, the Ama divers, the pearl and aquarium sights on the coast, and the local seafood. Everything comes from the region's official tourism organization.

We read the English pages of Visit Iseshima, the official site of the Iseshima Tourism and Convention Organization, on 2026-10-04. We name no hotels, shops or restaurants, and we give no prices except where the site states one.

Oharai-machi and Okage-yokocho

Visit Iseshima says Oharai-machi is the town in front of Naiku. It says shops line about 800 meters of stone pavement along the Isuzu River, with restaurants, souvenir shops and merchant stores. It says the area suits a walk after the shrine.

Okage-yokocho sits in the middle of Oharai-machi. The site says it is a re-creation of buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods. It says the area has restaurants and souvenir shops, Japanese drum performances, picture-story shows and a museum about the Ise pilgrimage called Okageza. Okageza costs 300 yen for an adult and 100 yen for a schoolchild, according to the site, and entry to the area itself is free. We did not check shop opening hours.

Ama divers and the coast

The site says that along the beaches of Toba and Shima you can see Ama, the women divers, fishing by a method used for more than 2,000 years. It describes the Ama hut experience, where visitors sit with working Ama around an open fireplace and eat a seafood lunch. It also says Mikimoto Pearl Island, which it calls the birthplace of the world-famous Mikimoto pearls, offers demonstrations by Ama.

The site names Futami Okitama Shrine and its Meoto-iwa, the husband-and-wife rocks, as a place where people have purified themselves before they visit Ise Jingu. It describes sunrise views there. It also names viewing points over Ago Bay and says the bay can be seen in panorama from Yokoyama Observatory.

Beaches, islands and attractions

The site describes Goza Shirahama as a white sand beach on the Pacific with shallow, clear water. It says the Shima Nature School offers sea kayaking and guided cycling. It says islands such as Toshijima and Kamishima are 10 to 40 minutes by ship from Toba Marine Terminal.

For attractions, it says Toba Aquarium is the only aquarium in Japan that keeps a dugong, and that it has 12 themed areas. It describes Parque Espana as a theme park with a Spanish townscape. We have not checked these claims ourselves.

Seafood and local food

The site says two of the best seasonal foods are Ise spiny lobster and anori fugu, a natural tiger blowfish served in winter. It says Matoya oysters come into season in the winter and that the Ama catch abalone. It adds that Matsusaka beef is the brand beef of the region and that Iseudon, a thick noodle dish, is a local soul food.

Seafood allergies are common. Tell the staff about your allergies before you order, and ask about any ingredient you do not know.

Views of the bay

The site says you can see all of Ago Bay in panorama from Yokoyama Observatory, and it names Tomoyama Observatory for the evening sky over the bay. It says Mieshima Observatory shows a heart-shaped fleet of boats and that the Ugura picnic site overlooks a heart-shaped bay. Our guide to Ise Jingu covers the shrine itself.

Trains for the view

The site says the Kintetsu Shimakaze connects Nagoya, Osaka and Kyoto with the area. It also names a sightseeing train called Tsudoi that runs between Iseshi Station and Kashikojima Station, with seats that face the windows. Our guide to reaching Ise-Shima covers the Shimakaze.
